Environmental and earth scientists are frequently required to provide scientifically defensible support in decisionmaking processes related to important environmental problems (e.g. climate change, contaminant migration, carbon sequestration, nuclear waste storage, etc.) (Harrington and Gidley1985; Caselton and Luo1992; Paleologos and Lerche1999; Min et al.2005; Levy2005; Tesfamariam and Sadiq2006; Kentel and Aral2007).
