EnviTrace’s Project RAIN Selected for U.S. Department of Energy's Genesis Mission
EnviTrace is proud to announce that Project RAIN has been selected by the U.S. Department of Energy to advance to award negotiations under the Genesis Mission Phase I Request for Applications.
One of just 19 company-led projects selected nationwide, Project RAIN will develop an AI-enabled scientific workflow to improve understanding and prediction of coupled surface-water and subsurface systems.
Advancing AI-enabled water-system science
Project RAIN — Rigorous AI and Information Network for Surface-Subsurface Water System Coupling — will design and demonstrate an AI-enabled scientific workflow to improve understanding and prediction of interconnected surface-water and subsurface systems.
Developed in collaboration with Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and University of California, Davis, Project RAIN brings together expertise in artificial intelligence, scientific computing, water science, and subsurface-system modeling.
The project will explore how AI can be integrated with rigorous scientific investigation to help researchers work with complex environmental data, improve predictive capabilities, and generate new insight into the interactions among surface water, groundwater, and the surrounding subsurface.
The goal of the Phase I RFA awards is to identify promising pathways toward transformative scientific capabilities and establish a foundation for future investment and scale. Project teams will design and demonstrate research workflows that integrate AI with scientific investigation, while rigorously evaluating whether those approaches can accelerate discovery, improve predictive capabilities, enhance experimentation, or generate new scientific insights.
Part of a historic national initiative
The Genesis Mission is a historic national initiative led by the U.S. Department of Energy, which is building the world’s most powerful integrated science discovery platform. By uniting government, industry, academia, and philanthropy, it is accelerating breakthroughs in energy, scientific discovery, and national security through a new platform that combines AI, supercomputing, quantum systems, and advanced scientific instruments.
The inaugural Genesis Mission portfolio includes 278 projects from teams led by national laboratories, universities, companies, and nonprofit organizations.
