Inverse Problems in Hydrosystem Modeling — EnviTrace Co-Organizes a CMWR 2026 Session

We’re excited to announce that EnviTrace LLC is co-organizing a dedicated session on Inverse Problems in Hydrosystem Modeling at the upcoming Computational Methods in Water Resources (CMWR) 2026 conference. Held in Bologna, Italy, CMWR is a leading international conference that brings together researchers, engineers, and practitioners to advance computational methods in hydrology and water resources. This session will highlight innovative approaches to improve predictions and understanding of hydrosystems.

About the Session:

Inverse problems play a critical role in hydrology by allowing us to estimate model parameters, quantify uncertainties, and identify plausible structures in water resources models. These techniques are essential for enhancing predictive capabilities when direct measurements are challenging (or impossible).

Session Themes

Our CMWR session will feature talks and discussions around:

  • Physics-informed inversion that integrates governing equations with observations to improve stability and interpretability
  • Uncertainty quantification to communicate confidence bounds and support risk-aware decision making
  • Scalable algorithms for large spatial domains and high-resolution data
  • Data fusion methods that combine remote sensing, wells, geophysical surveys, and in situ sensors
  • Application-driven case studies in groundwater, contaminant transport, managed aquifer recharge, and hydrologic forecasting

Organizers:

EnviTrace's CTO, Velimir "monty" Vesselinov, is co-organizing the session and contributing perspectives from applied ML and physics-informed modeling for the subsurface. Fellow session co-organizers include:

  • Anneli Guthke, University of Stuttgart

  • Wolfgang Nowak, University of Stuttgart

Call for Contributions

We are planning 12 oral presentations and 5 poster presentations for this session. Abstract submissions will be accepted from January 25 to March 9, 2026. Whether your work is theoretical, computational, or applied, we welcome your contributions. Learn more and submit your abstract: CMWR Session Topics

Why Attend: - Join Us at CMWR 2026

CMWR is a premier venue for water resources research, offering an unparalleled opportunity to engage with the global hydrology community, share insights, and explore collaborative opportunities. Don’t miss the chance to be part of this forward-looking session!
